Men women and children shelter and services.
The Bowery Mission Women’s Center at Heartsease Home is committed to the vision of a safe home where a woman without shelter, without hope and without an advocate can find spiritual, emotional and physical restoration. Our program is the only faith-based residential recovery program for homeless women in Manhattan.
Up to 20 women can participate in the program at one time, sharing bedrooms in a five-story brownstone. Our daily curriculum includes counseling, life skills classes, spiritual disciplines and educational enrichment, along with volunteer-led opportunities like painting, creative writing and sewing lessons. Our Career Center provides tutoring and resume assistance.
More than 150 women have benefited from The Bowery Mission Women’s Center since it opened in February 2005. The program resulted from a partnership between The Bowery Mission, which had been engaged in a specific Women’s Initiative since 1990, and Heartsease Inc., which had been engaged in women’s ministry since 1900. The Bowery Mission raised 18 months of operational funding and more than $450,000 in capital to renovate the Heartsease Home before it opened. In 2008, the two organizations merged to ensure that this life-transforming ministry to women would continue.
