We have an emergency shelter in Portland, Maine
Our shelter is a temporary home available to women 18 years and older, with or without children, experiencing domestic violence
Shelter services include: basic needs (food, clothing, personal care items) and in-house education programs
Individual advocacy/case management is available which includes personalized safety planning; emotional support; information and education about the dynamics of domestic abuse; referrals and connections to both internal and community resources needed to maintain safety and further self-empowerment; assistance with applying for and obtaining permanent housing
At Family Crisis Services, we are committed to serving all victims of domestic violence with the utmost respect and concern for their safety.
Toward that end, we work actively to increase our own awareness around issues of racism, anti-Semitism, ethnocentrism, ageism and adultism, ableism, homophobia, and heterosexism so that we are better prepared to work with anyone being abused in their intimate partnerships.
Some of the links under Outreach Services lead to information about specific initiatives we are currently working on to increase our own awareness about specific cultural needs of some survivors, as well as to educate within these communities about the issue of domestic violence. Other initiatives focus specifically on the medical community and the criminal justice system.
Because we are aware that domestic violence does not occur in a vacuum, but rather that it is linked to all other forms of oppression, it is our desire to work collaboratively with other social change organizations doing anti-oppression work.
