The Greater Lawrence YWCA

The YWCA of Greater Lawrence was founded in 1892 to aid women and girls who were coming to the City of Lawrence to work in its mills and factories.

The agency recognized then, as it does today, that women and families must first have basic necessities such as:

  • shelter
  • safety
  • food
  • health care and child-care before they are able to become truly self-sufficient

The YWCA today offers many programs to help women and girls achieve independence including child care and afterschool, educational programs, sports leagues and recreational programs, transitional housing, counseling, advocacy and access to health care.
